If you are getting less life out of your battery, but you’re just not sure if it's time for a new one, follow these steps:

  • Invest in a digital voltmeter (you can get a low-cost one for around $30)
  • Charge the battery completely, then connect the prongs of the voltmeter to the correct terminals of the battery. Keeping up with charging is the cornerstone of battery maintenance. 
  • Start the engine and check the meter. A healthy 12-volt RV battery should maintain a range from 9.5 - 10.5 volts under the load for a good 30 seconds straight
  • If the battery drops steadily under load, it is probably time to buy a new one
